MAY IS NATIONAL TENNIS MONTH, so WCTA held it's Annual Benefit Fundraiser on May 19 & 20. Proceeds went toward the Tennis In The Park Program and the Kids To Camp Program. Our tournament sponsors are the real "heros" during our largest fundraising event of the year. They are the ones who are responsible for our continued growth! (2007 photos to follow soon).
2007 TOURNAMENT SPONSORS WERE:
NPGlass - donated all the beautiful glass trophies for the adult events.
"ACE" SPONSORS: Carpenter Insurance Chuck's CATA Classic Climb On! Products Craters & Freighters Deer Creek of Wimberley Lynda & John Greer, Overlook Plaza Mounger & Campbell, L.L.P. Myers Concrete Construction, LP Ozona National Bank Red Corral Ranch Wells Fargo Bank NA Wolf Tennis
"SUPER CHAMP" SPONSORS: Brookshire Brothers Jan & Cliff Strickland
"CHAMPION" SPONSORS: Corky's Barber Shop Cypress Creek Cafe King Feed Pat L. Murphy Group
So many volunteers helped that we actually had to tell some of them they weren't needed after all and they could go watch the matches! Many thanks to our WCTA members who helped us so much.
The Junior and Parent/Child events were a "hit" again this year. And, the teams from St. Stephen's Episcopal School were lots of fun to watch. Their enthusiasm was contagious: this was the first tournament for some of them and some had never played a real "match" before. The parents watching seemed to be having fun too, in spite of the heat.
FROM THE WCTA BOARD OF DIRECTORS, AND ALL WCTA MEMBERS, THANK YOU TO EVERY PLAYER, FOR WITHOUT YOU - THERE WOULD BE NO TOURNAMENT!
2007 John Newcombe's Weekend for Two Adults winner is WCTA member, John Schick. Congratulations John!

| Saturday Morning & Tuesday Evening Doubles, Clay Court Play at Newks, and WCTA Tennis Ladder! |
|

SATURDAY MORNING & TUESDAY EVENING DOUBLES: Does playing some "round-robin" tournaments on Saturday mornings or Tuesday evenings interest you?
Does meeting and playing tennis with your fellow WCTA members interest you?
WCTA is coordinating regularly scheduled Saturday morning "league" play for WCTA members only. One of our goals is for WCTA to be a part of USTA Team Tennis. Saturday Morning Doubles is a first step. You do not need a partner - you can just come to the courts at 9:30 every Saturday (weather and holidays permitting). If you need some warm-up time, please be there by 9:15 and be ready to start play at 9:30. Also, some members (the early birds!) start play at 8:30).
We began on Sunday, December 5, 2004 and, so far, we are averaging 16 players every Saturday and Tuesday. We began this program as a Sunday Afternoon Doubles "league", but with the afternoon heat, we have moved to Saturday mornings.
NEWK'S CLAY COURT PLAY: Clay court play at John Newcombe's in New Braunfels began September 22, 2005 for WCTA members only. Men's 3.5 to 4.5 doubles is at Newk's Thursday evenings, under the lights. Following the matches, they enjoy the "Aussie" hospitality!
Please let Hank Melnar or David Schumacher know your interest in this event. Hank and David are the League Coordinators for the 2007 fall session. It will be an eight-week league. Please contact Hank or David even if you want to participate as a substitute. Hank's email is melnar@sbcglobal.net and David's is jdschu66@earthlink.net.
For more information on leagues and team tennis, visit our Links page, click on USTA, then League Play.
WCTA TENNIS LADDER: In the spring of 2007, WCTA began a ladder program for all WCTA members who want to play on a more consistent, competitive level. For information on joining the ladder program, email WCTA at dkbk@austin.rr.com or visit the Contact Us link on this web site.

| WCTA Ladies Benefit League - 2007 Fall League to begin soon! |
|
|
WCTA has organized an 8-week Ladies Benefit League. The small fee from this league, along with funds raised from sponsorships at the 2007 May Benefit Fundraiser, sent 16 deserving junior players to area tennis camps this summer.
The last league was on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. Please contact Susan Russell, Ladies League Coordinator, at 847-8478 or email her at www.out410s@yahoo.com, if you are interested in playing as a regular or a substitute. The fall 2007 league will begin soon!
WCTA has received grant money from USTA to promote league play and to assist junior players. We are excited to be able to accomplish our goal of promoting tennis and our youth in the Wimberley Valley!
